[Lady Ranfurly's sitting room, Goverment House, Wellington.]. (PA1-f-194-08)
[Between 1897 and 1903]1 b&w original photographic print.; Silver gelatin print 236 x 295 mm mounted on album page 272 x 359 mm.; Single Photograph. ;
Scope & Content
View of Lady Ranfurly's sitting room. Richly patterned wall papers and fabric form the background. Flowers are a feature. They include potted Azaleas and Cinerarias, and vases of Tulips, Freesias, Spraxias, and Jerbera. Some of the vases and plant pots fall into the contemporary category of "art pottery". There are also ebonized, rush seated "art chairs". A stool supporting an art vase of flowers is decorated in a technique called chip carving, a form of ornamentation derived from 17th century British fashions in decorative wood carving. This technique was used by commercial furniture makers, but was also a popular home craft for middle class women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are carved maori boxes (waka huia) on some of the tables, and family photographs and prints of paintings on the mantlepeice above the cast iron and tiled grate. The mantelpiece is draped with swags of fabric. Books, fabric covered and wicker arm chairs and a large oak table are also part of the furnishings. Photograph taken between 1897 and 1903 by an unknown photographer.

[Between 1897 and 1903]1 b&w original photographic print.; Toned silver gelatin print 151 x 206 mm mounted on album page 272 x 359 mm.; Single Photograph. ;
Scope & Content
View of a detail of the room in Government House, Wellington, used as an office by Major Alexander, Private Secretary and Aid de Camp to the Governor, Lord Ranfurly. The photograph shows the collections decorating part of the wall and the area above the fireplace. The wall area supports a variety axes, drums, and spears from the pacific islands arranged on a tapa cloth. A crest of pacific spears also tops the display over the fire place. Most of the collection over the fire place consists of photographs, those of Lord and Lady Ranfurly are displayed in wooden frames decorated with chip carving. This technique of wood carving was derived in part from 16th and 17th century British fashions in decorating furniture. It was used by commercial furniture manufacturers, but was also a popular home hobby craft practiced by middle class women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. That containing Lady Ranfurly's image is designed with a certain arbitary arangement of elements, a design fashion derived by Europeans from certain conventions of Japanese design. Among the photographs there are two framed paintings. One is a signed water colour of a Maori girl by Francis Hodgkins. Photograph taken between 1897 and 1903 by an unknown photographer.
