Scope & Content
Album documenting the Pacific Cruise of Lord Ranfurly on HMS Mildura in October 1900, during which the Cook Islands and Niue were annexed for New Zealand. The album documents the annexation ceremonies on Rarotonga, Mangaia, Aitutaki and Niue, and also records visits to Penrhyn (including the leper colony) and Manihiki (where they went out on a pearling lugger) in the northern Cook Islands, Tonga, and Raoul, Macaulay & Curtis Islands in the Kermadec Group. All photographs were taken by Malcolm Ross, who accompanied Lord Ranfurly as correspondent for the Press.

Biographical & Historical Note
As indicated in Hill-Trevor's account (PA1-f-143, p 32), the Governor's boat was swamped while attempting to return to the ship from Raoul Island. this incident was alluded to by Malcolm Ross in "Through Tuhoe land; Lord Ranfurly's farewell to the Maori people" (Christchurch Press, 1904).
