As indicated in Hill-Trevor's account (PA1-f-143, p 32), the Governor's boat was swamped while attempting to return to the ship from Raoul Island. this incident was alluded to by Malcolm Ross in "Through Tuhoe land; Lord Ranfurly's farewell to the Maori people" (Christchurch Press, 1904).
